I tried out a number of places on my recent visit to Namma Bengaluru! This city is a food lovers paradise, with new places opening up every other day with cuisines from all over the world. And its not just the up scale restaurants I am talking about, but even your small food trucks and other such inconspicuous looking joints that dish out some lip-smacking food.
The first time I ever had a Bao was at Bangalore a few years back, at an upscale restro, and post that, back in Hyderabad at a couple other places, but nothing could come close in terms of texture or flavour to the one I had there.
For those of you who aren’t aware of the heavenly dish that is a Bao, well it is a mildly sweet steamed Chinese bun, that is cottony soft and comes with various options in fillings. In my opinion I feel a Bao and Pork are a match made in heaven.
But finding a place in Hyderabad or Bangalore that serves affordable Bao seemed like a dream, as its usually figures in the entrees section of a exhaustive menu at restaurants, that too at prices that can put a hole in your wallet. So for the Bao crazy souls like me, Kylie’s decided to be the answer to our innumerable prayers for a place that serves Bao as an entree, mains and dessert!! Yes.. You heard me right…dessert too!
Kylie’s is this small hole in the wall Bao shop, that serves Bao, just Bao and only Bao! But, in a wide range of awesome fillings, from veg like tofu/panner to poulty, lamb and pork; and even seafood. They have some fusion Bao too like the Tandoori Bao or the Apollo/Amristsari fish Bao. They had some awesome sounding dessert Baos too, which unfortunately I did not get to try. But those who did, told they were amazing!
I preferred to have the Classic Bao…the Char sui , which comes with pork belly tossed in hoisin sauce. What I found interesting here is that it had a topping of caramelized julienned apple and soaked raisins, that gave blasts of flavour, which complimented the pork belly fabulously! Loved it!!! The meat was melt in the mouth soft, and coming encased in the soft and fluffy bao was just the cherry on the top.
The Hickory smoked chicken Bao, was good too, with the smoked flavour coming through, but I felt it was a tad dry, maybe extra of the mustard Mayo would do the trick. Or, it could be that maybe I’m just partial to the pork Bao and everything pales in comparison.
Now talking about the Bao itself… unlike some deflated Bao that I have had the misfortune to taste recently in Hyderabad, which was just sad; the Bao here was soft, fluffy and fresh. The taste was perfectly mild sweet with a hint of yeast flavour. Just one word to describe it…Perfect!!!
The gentleman and lady at the counter take care of your orders and also serve it once done. They are pretty nice and give you suggestions on what flavors to try when asked. As of now they operate with only outdoor seating, with stools which works with the beautiful weather of Banagalore!
Definitely recommend this place to other Bao lovers and newbies alike. You gotta try it to know why I love it so.
